The Decemberists – The band I should’ve found sooner

Meg Maguire • Mar 12, 2024

Discovering The Decemberists was like finding a time-travelling storyteller for my playlist. Thanks to my brother's introduction in India, I'm now happily obsessed with their folk-rock history lessons set to catchy tunes. Better late than never to this musical party!

Unearthed by my brother during a holiday escapade in India, The Decemberists have been a delightful thorn in my husband's side ever since. With tracks like "June Hymn," "Rocks in the Box," and "A Beginning Song" (in fact, just about every song they have), Colin Meloy's lyrical wizardry effortlessly weaves history and melody into a captivating tapestry. As a self-proclaimed history nerd, their music is like a time-travelling jukebox that speaks directly to my inner Renaissance fair enthusiast. I may never know why it took me this long to stumble upon their folk-rock storytelling magic. But hey, it's better to be late to the party than miss out entirely, right? So here's to driving my husband mad with their tunes and embracing my newfound Decemberist obsession. Cheers to musical discoveries and endlessly catchy melodies!
